Should I change jobs over RTO?
Maybe. But not before you've priced the mandate, asked for the raise that offsets it, and checked what leaving would cost. Three steps, in order.
A return-to-office mandate can be the thing that tips you out of a job, but it's an expensive decision to make on feeling. Work it in order: price it, negotiate it, then, only if you'd leave anyway, check you can afford to.
Step 1, price the mandate
Put a real number on it: cash out of pocket, hours a year, and the pre-tax raise that would cancel the cash cost. A mandate that "feels" annoying and one that quietly costs you a five-figure raise are different decisions. Run yours in the RTO cost calculator.
Step 2, negotiate before you resign
The offsetting-raise figure is a negotiation input, not just a grievance. Ask for that raise, or for fewer office days, or a remote exception, with the number in hand. The negotiation script generator turns it into an email you can send. Most people skip this step and it's the cheapest one.
Step 3, check your runway before you leave
If you'd walk without another offer lined up, the question stops being about commute cost and becomes about how long your money lasts. Model savings against spending in the layoff runway calculator before you hand in notice, the same math a laid-off worker runs, applied on your own terms.
Questions
Is it worth quitting over a return-to-office mandate?
Only after you've priced it and tried to offset it. Put a dollar-and-hours figure on the mandate, ask for the neutralising raise or fewer days first, and, if you'd leave without a job lined up, check your runway. Quitting is the last lever, not the first.
What should I do before deciding?
Three steps: price the mandate in the RTO calculator; take the offsetting-raise number into a negotiation before you resign; and if you'd leave without another offer, model how many months your savings cover in the runway calculator. Decide with the numbers in front of you.
