2026 · scenario
Severance and unemployment at the same time
Can you collect both? Usually yes. But the timing is a real-money decision, because some states pause or reduce unemployment while severance is being paid.
Getting a severance package doesn't automatically disqualify you from unemployment. But the two interact, and how they interact depends entirely on your state. In some states, severance is treated like wages and delays or reduces your weekly benefit for the weeks it covers. In others, severance is ignored and you can claim unemployment from the moment you're out of work. That difference can be worth thousands, which is why when you file is a decision worth getting right.
The two ways states handle it
- Severance delays or offsets benefits. The state allocates your severance over a number of weeks and treats it as income, so your unemployment is reduced (often to $0) for those weeks. You claim after the severance period ends.
- Severance is ignored. The state doesn't count severance against unemployment, so you can claim right away and collect both at once.
Because this varies so much, our calculators flag it per state rather than guessing, check your state's page and confirm with the agency before you file. Filing in the wrong week can forfeit benefits you were entitled to, or trigger an overpayment you have to pay back.
A practical sequence
- Read your severance agreement, is it a lump sum or paid over weeks? Lump sums are often allocated to a single period; continued salary can offset benefits for longer.
- Check your state's rule on your unemployment page.
- File as soon as you're eligible if your state ignores severance; wait until the severance period ends if it offsets. When unsure, file and let the agency determine it. But ask first.
- Fold both income streams into your runway.
Questions
Will taking severance disqualify me from unemployment?
Generally no, being laid off (not fired for cause) keeps you eligible. Severance may delay or reduce the benefit in some states, but it rarely disqualifies you outright.
Do I have to report severance when I file?
Yes. Report it honestly on your claim; the agency decides how it's treated. Failing to report it can create an overpayment you'll have to repay, sometimes with penalties.
