The cost of a divorce
The lawyer's fee is the small part. The real cost is the asset split, years of support, and running two households instead of one.
A divorce's true cost isn't the attorney's invoice, it's the division of everything you built together, the support that can run for years, and the jump from one household to two. This lays out the money side: how the marital estate splits, the support totals, and the fees.

Worked example
A $670,000 gross estate less $100,000 of debt, with 5 years of alimony and 10 of child support:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Net marital estate | $570,000 |
| Your half of the assets | $285,000 |
| Total alimony | $120,000 |
| Total child support | $180,000 |
| Your out-of-pocket (fees + support) | $317,500 |
The $570,000 estate splits to $285,000 a side, but the support stream, $300,000 over the years. Plus fees is the cash cost that keeps going long after the decree. That ongoing obligation, not the settlement, is what reshapes a budget.
Questions
Is everything really split 50/50?
Not always. Community-property states (California, Texas and seven others) lean toward a 50/50 split of marital property; the rest use "equitable distribution," which aims at fair rather than equal and weighs income, length of marriage and more. The even split here is a baseline.
How is alimony taxed?
For divorces finalized after 2018, alimony is not deductible by the payer and not taxable to the recipient, a reversal of the old rule. Child support has never been taxable or deductible either way.
What about retirement accounts?
Splitting a 401(k) or pension needs a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) to avoid taxes and penalties. Done right, the transfer is tax-free; done wrong, it can trigger a taxable distribution.
