Brand deal tax calculator
The free product a brand sends you is taxable income, even though you can't pay the tax with it.
A brand deal is self-employment income: you owe the 15.3% self-employment tax plus income tax, and nothing is withheld. The trap is gifted product, a "PR package"which is taxable at its fair-market value even though it is not cash. This works out the tax on the cash and the product together, so you know what to set aside.

Worked example, $15,000 cash plus $3,000 of product
A creator with $50,000 of other income takes a deal worth $15,000 in cash plus $3,000 of gifted product, with $2,000 of business deductions:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Deal value (cash + product) | $18,000 |
| Net self-employment income | $16,000 |
| Self-employment tax | โ $2,261 |
| Federal income tax on the deal | โ $1,400 |
| State income tax | โ $409 |
| After-tax from the deal | $13,930 |
| Set aside about | 22.6% |
The $18,000 deal keeps $13,930 after tax, set aside roughly 22.6%. The awkward part is the $3,000 of gifted product: it is taxed as income, but you cannot pay the tax with a hoodie and a ring light, so the cash has to cover the tax on the product too.
Questions
Is gifted product from a brand taxable?
Yes. Products a brand sends you in exchange for content, or as compensation, are taxable at fair-market value, the IRS treats them like income. Truly unsolicited gifts with no strings are a grey area, but anything you are expected to promote is income. Track the value of PR packages.
What can a creator deduct?
Ordinary and necessary business costs: cameras, lighting, editing software, a home studio, props bought for content, a manager or agency's cut, and travel for shoots. These reduce the net self-employment income the tax is calculated on, enter them as deductions above.
Will I get a 1099 for a brand deal?
A brand that pays you $600 or more usually issues a 1099-NEC. But the income is taxable whether or not you receive one, including cash deals and the value of gifted product that never appears on any form. Keep your own records.
Should I set up an S-corp?
Once creator profit is consistently high (often $80,000+), an S-corp election can cut self-employment tax on the distribution portion. Below that the cost and complexity usually outweigh it. The S-corp calculator shows the savings at your numbers.
